Linear Accelerator for Cancer Treatment |
Duration:
|
12 months |
Project Description:
In an effort to reduce the number of patients waiting
for specialised non invasive
cancer treatment, Waikato Hospital management
decided to install a fourth linear accelerator system.
A linear accelerator is a highly specialised piece of radiation
therapy equipment
that very precisely targets a patient's cancerous
cells.
Before the treatment systems could be installed a purpose built
4 storey building
was designed and constructed with concrete walls
up to 2 metres thick around the patient treatment room.
This contract involved the installing and commissioning of the lighting,
power and emergency lighting systems, as well as a new main switchboard,
sub distribution
boards and incoming feeder cables.
A unique aspect of this project was the design and build of a safety
system that
was reliable and durable enough to provide safety coverage
for both staff and
patients. The system involved the interlocking
of both the linear accelerator
system, a 2 ton neutron door and various
emergency stops and door switches
on multiple building levels.
